UCF and the Heart of Florida United Way

A Partnership for our Community

The University of Central Florida values its long-time partnership with the Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW), which includes many opportunities for our Knight Family to find meaningful community engagement. HFUW has been serving the community for more than 75 years. They are central Florida’s most comprehensive and largest funder for the region’s most critical health and human service programs. In 2013, HFUW raised and managed $26.6 million throughout Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties to help those in need in our local community. Last year the United Way touched the lives of one in five residents.

UCF’s Live United Campaign

UCF participates in an annual pledge drive in support of the Heart of Florida United Way.  This campaign is more than a pledge drive – it is our students, faculty, and staff coming together to advocate, volunteer, and donate.  Special events, fundraising activities, involvement and award opportunities, and much more occur throughout the month of October.  A student committee plans the events for the student body; a team of more than 200 individuals implements the faculty and staff campaign activities.   Together, we make a difference for our community!

Campaign Impact Since 2011, UCF has contributed $577,000 through our Live United campaign.

Prior to 2011, UCF contributed more than $2 million dollars through the Florida State Employees’ Charitable Campaign (FSECC), which was our previous employee giving program.

Service Learning Opportunities for Students

The Heart of Florida United Way, as well as many of its more than 50 partner agencies, provide volunteer, internship, and employment opportunities to UCF students. Members of our Knight Family share their skills and expertise in a wide variety of disciplines such as public administration, social work, evaluation and measurement, marketing, and communications to support the work of the United Way in Central Florida.

If you are interested in learning more about these opportunities, please contact us at liveunited@ucf.edu.

UCF’s part in the Investing In Results model

The United Way’s Investing In Results model offers donors a way to invest in specific categories of need in our local community that have been identified as the most critical.  The research that identified the focus areas was conducted by UCF’s own Dr. James Wright, professor, Department of Sociology. Dr. Michael Frumkin, Dean of the College of Health and Public Affairs, serves as chair of the Alleviating Hunger and Homelessness Cabinet and is a member of the Investing in Results Cabinet.
